Omah Lay Eyes ‘Africa’s Wealthiest’ Artiste Title, Names Wizkid, Burna Boy, Drake As ‘Idols’
Afrobeats star Omah Lay has declared his ambition to become the wealthiest African artiste, expressing strong confidence in his career trajectory and creative vision.
The Grammy-nominated singer also highlighted his desire to make a lasting impact beyond music.
“I’m going to be the wealthiest African artiste ever in a few years. I’m going to build stuff that would change the world,” he said on PlayKissXtra.
The Port Harcourt-born artiste, during the interview, identified several global stars as key influences on his sound and artistry, including “Wizkid, Burna Boy, Drake, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars and Harry Styles.”

Describing his creative process, the ‘Soso’ crooner portrayed himself as unconventional and noted that artistic expression remains central to his well-being
“I’m a creative. I’m crazy. My head is not correct. I need to create art to feel good.”
Omah Lay rose to prominence in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic with his debut EP Get Layd, and What Have We Done, which produced hits like “Bad Influence” and “You.”
That same year, he made headlines after being briefly arrested in Uganda alongside fellow artist Tems for alleged violations of COVID-19 protocols. His music style, often described as “Afro-depression” sound and soulful Afro-fusion, stands out for its emotive lyrics.
Over the years, he has continued to evolve, releasing major projects such as Boy Alone in 2022,
In 2026, Omah Lay released his highly anticipated second studio album, Clarity of Mind, on April 3.
The 12-track project has dominated charts on platforms like Audiomack and Spotify.
The album rollout featured a creative “People + Places” strategy, with intimate “Meet Me At The Warehouse” listening sessions held in major cities worldwide.
Omah Lay has also gained international recognition, including a Grammy nomination in 2026 for his “With You” collaboration with Davido, where he shared the spotlight with global artistes like Tyla, Wizkid and Burna Boy.
