A spike in fake emails, messages, and online communications has alarmed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which warns that suspected cybercriminals are trying to get past security measures and deceive the public. The apex bank said that the fake mails frequently contain misleading assertions regarding the bank’s leadership, license, and policy issues in a late Tuesday statement signed by Hakama Sidi Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications.
The statement claims that the offenders utilize these false narratives to trick gullible victims into clicking on harmful links, which can result in unauthorized access to financial and personal accounts.
“The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) wishes to alert members of the public to the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications purporting to originate from or be associated with the Bank, which are intended to misinform members of the public,” the statement states.
“These fraudulent messages, which encourage recipients to click links, are designed to hack personal accounts and promote false information about the Bank’s leadership, licensing, and policy issues.”
The Central Bank of Nigeria’s official website is www.cbn.gov.ng, according to CBN, which advised people not to click on links or divulge personal information on dubious websites.
Additionally, the bank recommended that the public use the official website and reputable media channels to confirm the legitimacy of all CBN communications.
The public is also urged by CBN to notify law enforcement authorities of any suspected fraudulent websites, emails, or communications.
