A Nigerian lady has sparked emotional reactions online after sharing a touching story about her late mother and the promise she never got to fulfill.
The story, shared on Facebook by Dorcas Robert, captured moments from her matriculation to her recent convocation, highlighting the struggles her family faced.
Struggles During Matriculation
According to her, her matriculation day was marked by financial hardship, as her mother could not afford to attend.
She recalled how her mum prepared a simple meal of oil rice with fried egg and bought second-hand clothes (okrika), which she sent through her brother.
However, things didn’t go as planned, as the outfit didn’t fit, forcing her to wear her brother’s shirt. She also revealed that her brother’s only suit got burnt on his way to the event.
A Mother’s Promise
After the experience, her mother reportedly felt deeply saddened by how the day turned out and promised to make up for it during her convocation.
Convocation Without Her Mother
However, the lady revealed that by the time her convocation day finally came, her mother had passed away and was no longer there to fulfill that promise.
In her words: “During my matriculation, my mum was struggling financially, so she couldn’t make it. She prepared oil rice with fried egg on top, bought okrika, ironed it, and gave it to my brother to bring to me. My brother even brought his only suit to wear to my matriculation, but guess what? It got burnt on the bike on his way. And the okrika he brought for me didn’t fit, so I ended up wearing my brother’s shirt.
I went back home that day, and my mum felt so sad about everything that happened and the fact that she couldn’t come because money was tight. She promised me that for my convocation, I was going to be the best dressed, buffet sef go dey.
But guess who went to her convocation alone today? You guessed right, it’s me. And guess who didn’t get to buy the best dress or cook buffet for me? You guessed right again, my mum.”
