Xavi Simons will miss the remainder of the season and this summer’s World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Tottenham Hotspur.
The 23-year-old was stretchered off during Spurs’ 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers after a collision with defender Hugo Bueno. Initial reports indicate a possible anterior cruciate ligament injury, though further medical confirmation is expected.
Player reacts to setback
Simons confirmed the development in an emotional statement, admitting the injury has ended his campaign and dashed his hopes of representing the Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup.
“They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way,” he wrote.
“My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense.”
He added: “All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me … along with the World Cup.”
Blow for club and country
The injury is a major setback for Tottenham, who are battling relegation from the Premier League. Spurs currently sit 18th, two points from safety, with four matches remaining.
Simons has been a key figure in their survival push, and his absence removes a critical attacking outlet during a decisive phase of the season.
For the Netherlands, the timing is equally damaging. The national team are set to begin their World Cup campaign in June, with Simons expected to play a prominent role in midfield.
Focus shifts to recovery
Despite the disappointment, Simons signalled his intent to return stronger, stating: “It’ll take time to find peace with this, but I’ll continue to be the best team-mate I can be.”
The focus now shifts to rehabilitation, with a long-term recovery timeline likely if the ACL injury is confirmed.
