A driver has been arrested in connection with the abduction of passengers, including Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates, along the Makurdi–Otukpo road in Benue State.
The incident was confirmed by Benue Links Nigeria Limited, operators of the vehicle involved in the attack.
According to the company’s Information Officer, Johnson Ehi Daniel, the driver is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The bus, which was not approved for the night trip, was reportedly attacked on Wednesday night at Ikobi while conveying passengers.
Out of the victims, two passengers have reportedly escaped, while 13 others remain in captivity.
The company said the driver violated operational procedures by embarking on a night journey without approval, documentation, or official clearance.
The General Manager of the company, Alexander Aondohemba Fanafa, described the incident as distressing and assured that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims.
Meanwhile, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, is leading security operations aimed at rescuing the abducted passengers.
Security agencies are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack and the whereabouts of the victims.
