Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has lauded Governor Douye Diri for his transformative infrastructure drive in Bayelsa State.
The former Vice President gave the commendation following the inauguration of several key projects on Monday, April 20, 2026.
He commissioned the Agbura–Swali Road and the Referral Hospital Oporoma in Yenagoa and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas.
Osinbajo said the pace of development in Bayelsa has left him emotional, stressing that the governor understood the reason for governance.
“It is not often, especially in politics, that you find men or women able to keep their word. That is a very rare quality exhibited by Governor Douye Diri,” he said.
The ex-VP recalled his visit to the state on February 19, 2022, for the ground-breaking ceremony of the Angiama-Oporoma bridge project, saying he had his doubts when he saw the area was a forest.
Osinbajo, however, expressed delight that Diri had proved him wrong by ensuring the completion of the 630-metre bridge and the access road to Oporoma, which had been on the drawing board for over six decades.
“When he said there was going to be a bridge here, I had my doubts,” Osinbajo confessed. “But today that bridge stands there.”
He described the newly inaugurated road as a strategic artery, linking not just the communities of Agbura and Swali but also the Federal University, Otuoke, the Oloibiri Museum, the NCDMB Towers, the Federal Secretariat and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Bayelsa headquarters.
“The whole point of politics is to make life easier for the people. This road certainly will do that, easing movement, reducing stress and boosting economic activity,” he said.
In his remarks, Governor Diri said: “The essence of governance is to bring happiness to the people, not to make them sorrowful.
“Development must be felt at the grassroots. There is nothing like difficult terrain for us in Bayelsa.”
He vowed that no part of the state would be neglected, regardless of the mangrove swamps and waterways that have long defied developers.
Diri also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for their support, as well as the engineers and contractors who braved the terrain.Earlier, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Surveyor Moses Teibowei, revealed that the 6.72‑kilometre Agbura–Swali Road features modern design elements that will slash travel times, untangle traffic and supercharge commercial activity across the state.
