The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called for urgent government intervention in a dispute involving WINHOMES Global Services Limited and investors affected by the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road project.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, the civil rights group expressed concern over the length of time the matter has remained unresolved, noting that the situation could have implications for public confidence and Nigeria’s investment climate.
HURIWA said it had monitored the case for over two years, engaging with relevant stakeholders and reviewing available information.
The group stated that, despite these efforts and reported interactions between concerned parties and government authorities, the issues raised are yet to be conclusively addressed.
According to the association, the delay in resolving the matter highlights the need for a more efficient and transparent process in handling disputes involving private investments and public infrastructure projects.
HURIWA also referenced public comments attributed to the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, regarding the demolition of properties in the course of the road project. The group noted that such statements, which have circulated widely in the public space, underscore the importance of clarity on the processes and approvals guiding actions taken on major infrastructure developments.
The association stressed that clear communication and adherence to due process are essential in maintaining public trust, particularly in projects that affect private investments and communities.
HURIWA further noted that the case has drawn attention both locally and internationally, especially among members of the Nigerian diaspora with investment interests in the country. It warned that prolonged uncertainty in such matters could influence investor perception and confidence.
The group therefore urged the Federal Government to ensure a transparent review of the issues involved and to facilitate a fair and timely resolution for all parties.
It also called on the Federal Ministry of Works to provide detailed information on the procedures followed in the execution of the project, including steps taken to address concerns raised by affected stakeholders.
HURIWA maintained that strengthening accountability and ensuring prompt dispute resolution are critical to sustaining investor confidence and promoting Nigeria as a viable destination for investment.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring developments around the case and advocating for outcomes that align with the rule of law and due process.
