U.S. President Donald Trump has been described as “truly fearless” after a suspected gunman disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in what officials say was an attempted attack targeting the President and senior members of his administration.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt recounted the dramatic moments following the incident, revealing that the President and First Lady were swiftly moved to safety by Secret Service agents as the situation unfolded.
Leavitt, in an X post, said the evening, originally planned as a celebration of free speech and political engagement, was abruptly thrown into chaos.
“What was supposed to be a fun night at the WHCA dinner with President Trump delivering jokes and celebrating free speech was hijacked by a depraved crazy person who sought to assassinate the President and kill as many top Trump administration officials as possible,” she said.
According to her, she was with the President and the First Lady backstage when security operatives intervened.
“I was with President Trump and the First Lady back stage after we were quickly ushered to safety by Secret Service,” she stated.
Leavitt emphasised Trump’s composure during the incident, noting that the President remained calm despite the gravity of the threat.
“President Trump was truly fearless, but as he said last night, this political violence needs to end,” she added.
She also praised the swift response of law enforcement personnel, particularly a Secret Service agent who was injured while confronting the suspect.
“Thank you to law enforcement for keeping all of us safe, including the brave agent who took a bullet to the chest and immediately moved to neutralize the shooter,” Leavitt said.
