The Presidency has clarified the sudden exit of former Finance Minister, Wale Edun, from the Federal Executive Council.
According to the presidency, it said his departure was voluntary and not a dismissal.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, explained that the former minister stepped down due to health concerns.
The Presidency stressed that his resignation came before the announcement of a replacement.
According to the statement, “Wale Edun, the former Finance Minister, resigned due to health reasons, he was not sacked.”
The clarification follows growing speculation that Edun may have been removed from office amid ongoing economic reforms and policy adjustments by the current administration. However, the Presidency moved quickly to dismiss such claims.
Edun served as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy during a critical period marked by major fiscal decisions, including subsidy removal policies and efforts to stabilise the nation’s economy. His role placed him at the centre of Nigeria’s economic restructuring drive under Tinubu’s leadership.
Sources within government circles say his exit had been under consideration for some time due to his health condition, which reportedly limited his ability to fully discharge the demanding responsibilities of the office.
President Tinubu has since moved to fill the vacuum, appointing a successor as part of efforts to maintain continuity in the country’s economic management team.
