On Monday morning, an improvised explosive device (IED) allegedly planted by bandits exploded, killing a commercial driver instantly and critically injuring a woman who was travelling with her infant.
The incident has reignited fears over growing insecurity in Kwara, with residents describing the attack as terrifying. Dr. Abdul Woro, a local eyewitness, recounted the horror: “They planted the explosive on the road. As soon as the vehicle passed, it went off. The driver died instantly, and the woman was badly injured.”
Kaiama Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abubakar Abdullahi, confirmed the tragedy, revealing that the woman suffered severe head injuries and fractures, while the baby miraculously survived unharmed. Thanks to swift medical intervention, she was transported to Ilorin for urgent care.
Authorities linked the attack to recent crackdowns on the bandits’ logistics network. Abdullahi explained that the explosion was retaliation after security forces seized motorcycles and disrupted their operations. “These criminals cannot succeed without local collaborators. Informants are part of the problem,” he warned, urging residents to report suspicious activity.
The quick action of the police bomb disposal team prevented an even bigger tragedy, neutralizing a second IED planted nearby. While calm has returned to the area, vigilance remains high as security agencies continue their operation against the terror gangs.
This attack follows months of terror in Woro, where over 150 residents were killed and homes destroyed in previous assaults, prompting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deploy military forces and launch Operation Savannah Shield to restore order.
