Emmanuel Fernandez has been named Player of the Year at Rangers following an impressive 2025–26 campaign that saw the defender emerge as a central figure in the squad.

The Nigerian centre-back received the award at the club’s end-of-season ceremony in Glasgow, capping a breakthrough year marked by consistency and impact at both ends of the pitch.

Fernandez made 23 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, scoring five goals, an output that underlines his effectiveness in defensive duties and set-piece situations.

His performances were particularly influential in tightly contested fixtures, where Rangers relied on defensive contribution to secure results.

Rapid rise after summer move

The 23-year-old joined Rangers from Peterborough United last summer and has quickly adapted to top-flight football.

Within a year, he progressed from England’s third tier to competing in European football, making his debut in the UEFA Europa League.

His development has also been recognised externally, with Fernandez earning a place in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year as the only Rangers player included.

International progress with Nigeria

Fernandez’s rise has extended to the international stage with the Nigeria national football team. He made his debut against Iran on March 27 and scored in his first start in a 2-2 draw against Jordan.

Rangers confirmed the award in an official statement: “In his first season at Rangers, supporters voted Emmanuel Fernandez as Men’s Player of the Year as he collected the final award of the evening.”

The club added: “Since coming into the team, Fernandez has gone from strength to strength with commanding performances in defence, also showing his threat in set-piece situations.”

The recognition positions Fernandez as one of Nigeria’s emerging defensive prospects, with his trajectory suggesting a larger role for both club and country in the near future.
