Trump claims Virginia vote 'rigged' as Democrats hail win, vow nationwide redistricting fight

US President Donald Trump has alleged a vote in which Virginia backed a new electoral map was “rigged”, echoing his previous claims over election integrity.

“A RIGGED ELECTION TOOK PLACE LAST NIGHT,” Trump said on social media on Wednesday, following a referendum to allow the redrawing of the congressional map.

The change could give Democrats a strong advantage in 10 of the state’s 11 House districts.

US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries praised the outcome, calling it a “big victory for democracy” after the measure passed with 51.5 per cent support.

Jeffries pledged a nationwide campaign to counter Republican efforts to reshape maps.

“We will not let Donald Trump rig the midterm elections by gerrymandering maps all across the country without a forceful Democratic response,” he told reporters.
