Today, 25th April 2026, marks a profound and emotional milestone in the life of the academic community, particularly at Bayero University Kano. It is a day that signals the formal retirement of an extraordinary scholar, mentor, and intellectual giant—Abdalla Uba Adamu, a distinguished double Professor of Science Education and Communication and Cultural Studies, whose influence transcends disciplines, institutions, and continents.

I must admit, words seem inadequate at a moment like this. How does one fully capture decades of scholarship, mentorship, leadership, and service in a single tribute? How does one describe a man who has not only taught knowledge but has shaped lives, inspired visions, and built generations of thinkers and professionals?

While I may be short of words in expressing the depth of my emotions, I will never be short of prayers for you, Sir.

You have dedicated your life to the pursuit of knowledge and the advancement of education—not only within Bayero University, Kano, particularly in the Department of Information and Media Studies, but also at the National Open University of Nigeria, where your leadership and vision left indelible marks. Your career stands as a testament to intellectual rigor, administrative excellence, and a deep, unwavering commitment to nurturing minds.

Beyond the lecture halls and administrative offices, you shaped our worldview in the most profound way—by opening doors we did not even know existed. You exposed us—myself and Mainasara Yakubu Kurfi—to the international academic arena, giving us opportunities to engage, learn, and contribute on global platforms across countries such as Germany, Switzerland, US, the United Kingdom, Cameroon, South Africa, and Kenya, among others.

Through these exposures, you did not just broaden our academic horizons—you transformed how we see the world, how we think, and how we position ourselves within the global intellectual community. You identified us when we were still finding our paths, believed in us when we doubted ourselves, and invested in us with a rare sincerity that only a true mentor can offer. You built our confidence, sharpened our voices, and prepared us not just to participate, but to lead.
Equally worthy of mention in this piece is how he was able to accommodate all of us in the department of Information and Media Studies, Muhammad Ibrahim Danja, Hassan Alhaji Ya’u, Ruqayyah Yusuf Aliyu, Saminu Umar, Mukhtar Magaji, Aliyu Isah Agaie, Musa Adamu Labaran, Ummi Muhammad Hassan etc.
As a mentor, you have been more than a supervisor—you have been a guide, a father figure, and a source of inspiration. Your PhD and MSc supervisees, your undergraduate and postgraduate students, and indeed all who have passed through your tutelage carry with them the imprint of your wisdom, discipline, and passion for excellence. You did not merely teach courses; you taught purpose, curiosity, courage, and integrity.

Even in retirement, it is clear that your journey in academia is far from over. As you rightly noted, while you retire from formal service today, the academic community—both locally and globally—needs you now more than ever. Your scheduled seminar on Artificial Intelligence, your ongoing research engagements, your mentorship responsibilities, and your intellectual contributions continue to call for your presence and insight.

Indeed, retirement in your case is not an end—it is a transition into an even broader platform of impact.

On this special day, I pray:

May Allah (SWT) increase you in health and strength.
May He deepen your Imaan and grant you continued wisdom.
May He bless you and your family abundantly.
May He forgive any shortcomings in your years of service and reward you immensely for every life you have touched and every mind you have shaped.

Sir, your legacy is not written in books alone—it lives in people. It lives in your students, your colleagues, your mentees, and in the countless academic and professional spaces you have influenced across the world.

As you step into this new phase, we celebrate you, we honour you, and we thank you.

Retirement may have come, but your relevance remains timeless.
