Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the nation tonight at 8.30 pm, a day after a bill to implement women’s reservation in legislatures was voted down in the Lok Sabha. PM Modi chaired a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) earlier in the day. He is also scheduled to chair a full Cabinet meeting and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).

Key things to watch for in PM Modi’s address

In today’s address to the nation, PM Modi is expected to delve into several key issues, including the implementation of the women’s quota and the current developments in the Parliament, where the opposition on Friday voted against the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill 2026, further deepening the political divide. The PMO has, however, given no clarity on the subject on which the Prime Minister will address the nation.

The 106th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2023, also called the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, proposed 33% reservations for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, an increase in the lower house’s strength from 543 to 850. However, implementation is tied to delimitation in the latest proposal, a move that the Opposition has opposed. PM Modi will likely attack Opposition in his speech tonight.

The BJP-led NDA government failed to secure the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha on April 17. In the subsequent voting after a day-long debate, 230 opposed the bill, while 298 members supported it. During the debate, the Prime Minister had urged the Opposition parties to support the bill, saying those against the women’s reservation would pay the price for a long time.

PM Modi had stated that 33% reservation is the right of the Indian women, adding that it is time for the country’s 50% population to become a part of decision-making. After the bill’s defeat in the Lok Sabha, all eyes turn to PM Modi’s address tonight, with the women’s quota and delimitation remaining up in the air.
