Ola Aina has outlined the personal and professional factors behind his decision to represent the Nigeria national football team instead of England, pointing to family influence and identity as decisive elements.
Born in London to Nigerian parents, Aina progressed through England’s youth system from Under-16 to Under-20 level and was later called up to the Under-21 squad.
At the time, a pathway to the senior England team appeared viable, but that trajectory stalled after he failed to earn a competitive cap at that level.
Family influence proves decisive
A turning point came in March 2017 when Aina accepted an invitation to train with Nigeria’s senior team in London.
Reflecting on that period, the Nottingham Forest defender said his background ultimately shaped his choice.
“Born and raised in London, I decided to play for Nigeria. It was just a decision that I made when I was about 20. That’s where my parents are from; that’s my origin.
“The opportunity came for me and I thought it was the right one at that time, so I took it with both hands, and I’m here today.”
Due to his previous involvement with England at youth level, Aina required clearance from FIFA before switching allegiance.
Approval was granted ahead of his debut in a World Cup qualifier against Zambia in October 2017.
“My family are very proud of me, especially when I wear the Super Eagles shirt. They love it more than me. Even for me, it’s a privilege; it’s an honour.”
Career impact and future ambitions
Since making the switch, Aina has become a regular for Nigeria, contributing to their third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and second-place finish in 2023, where he was named in the Team of the Tournament.
At club level, the former Chelsea and Torino full-back is now targeting silverware with Nottingham Forest, who have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
Forest will face Aston Villa in an all-English semi-final, presenting Aina with an opportunity to add to his honours at senior club level.
