The Nigerian Medical Association has alerted security agencies to what it described as an illegal attempt by a group of individuals to convene an emergency delegates meeting outside the association’s constitutional framework.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary of the association, Dr Mannir Bature, said the National Officers Committee had become aware of “unauthorised activities” by persons allegedly parading themselves as members of the body.
Bature said the group was attempting to organise what it termed an Emergency Delegates Meeting, a move the association insisted had not been approved by any of its recognised organs.
“No Emergency Delegates Meeting has been sanctioned by the Office of the Secretary-General or any legally constituted organ of the Association,” he said.
The NMA stressed that its constitution does not empower any individual or group to unilaterally summon such a meeting, describing the move as a clear violation of its established procedures.
“The NMA Constitution does not empower any group of individuals or members to unilaterally summon or convene an EDM outside established constitutional procedures,” Bature stated.
Declaring the planned gathering unlawful, the association urged its members across the country to disregard it.

“Any such gathering being organised in the name of the NMA is therefore illegal, null and void, and should be disregarded by all members,” he added.
The association also issued a stern warning to those behind the move, cautioning that any attempt to use its name or platform to incite disorder or perpetrate illegality would not be tolerated.
“Any person or group found to be using the name, platform, or identity of the NMA to perpetrate illegality, incite disorder, or engage in acts that may lead to destruction of property will be held fully accountable,” the statement said.
According to the NMA, offenders would be sanctioned in line with its constitution and other applicable regulations.
It further called on relevant security agencies to take note of the situation and ensure that any actions capable of threatening peace and stability within the association and the wider public space are promptly addressed.
The NMA is the umbrella professional body for all registered medical doctors in Nigeria, representing practitioners across federal, state, and private health institutions. The association plays a central role in regulating professional conduct, promoting medical ethics, and advocating for improved healthcare policies and working conditions for doctors.
It operates through a structured system that includes the National Officers Committee, state branches, and affiliate bodies, with its decisions guided by a constitution that outlines procedures for meetings, elections, and disciplinary measures.
