The Nigeria Police Force has extradited fugitive Matthew Chukwuemeka Adebiyi to the United Kingdom to face alleged murder charges, in a move highlighting strengthened transnational policing efforts.
The extradition was facilitated through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau Abuja following a formal request by UK authorities in September 2024.
Adebiyi is wanted in connection with the alleged murder of Joshua Boadu on June 18, 2018, after which he reportedly fled to Nigeria. He is also accused of involvement in the supply of crack cocaine in the UK between October 2017 and March 2018.
The suspect was arrested on January 23, 2025, by INTERPOL operatives in Abuja, after which extradition proceedings commenced at the Federal High Court in Lagos.
On February 16, 2026, Justice A.O. Faji granted the application for his extradition in line with Nigeria’s Extradition Act. He was subsequently handed over to UK law enforcement officials on April 14, 2026, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.
The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, reiterated the commitment of the police to international cooperation, stressing that Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for fugitives.
In a related development, the police also strengthened collaboration with Save the Children to enhance school security across the country.
During a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters, the organisation commended the Police Schools Protection Squad for advancing the Safe School Declaration initiative and improving protection for learners.
Officials noted that Nigeria’s efforts in safeguarding education have gained global recognition, with support from the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack and interest from countries such as Norway.
The Nigeria Police reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security in schools and strengthening partnerships to ensure safe learning environments nationwide.
