Mother of NYSC Member Killed in Abuja Crossfire Demands Justice

The grieving mother of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, who was killed during a crossfire in Abuja, has called for justice following the tragic incident that claimed her son’s life.

The NYSC member was reportedly caught in the exchange of gunfire between troops of the Guards Brigade and suspected armed robbers who attacked Shagari Estate in the Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory in the early hours of April 25, 2026.

In an emotional video shared on social media, the bereaved mother of the NYSC member expressed deep anguish over the loss, crying uncontrollably as she appealed for justice.

“Nigeria has happened to me. I need justice. They killed him,” she said, capturing the pain and frustration that have since resonated widely online.

Incident triggers outrage

The killing of the NYSC member has sparked outrage among residents of the estate and across social media platforms, with many questioning the circumstances that led to the death of the young corps member.

Reports indicate that the incident occurred during a robbery operation that prompted a swift response from military personnel, leading to a gun battle in the residential area.

The chaotic exchange left residents in panic, with Jamiu becoming an unintended victim of the crossfire.

In response, the Headquarters Guards Brigade described the incident as tragic and expressed deep regret over the loss of life.

In a statement issued by Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the Brigade extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and all those affected.

The military also confirmed that a full investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, assuring the public that the process would be transparent.

Authorities disclosed that the remains of the deceased have been handed over to the appropriate authorities and deposited at Kubwa General Hospital.

The Guards Brigade reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property within the Federal Capital Territory, noting that it would review its operational procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

It emphasised that while troops remain engaged in combating criminal activities, measures would continue to be strengthened to ensure the safety of civilians.

Residents were also urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
