A senior Mossad operative who played a key role in laying the groundwork for Israel’s Operation Roaring Lion against Iran was killed during a mission outside Israel, Mossad Director David Barnea said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a Remembrance Day ceremony for fallen intelligence officers, Barnea said the operative, identified only as “M.”, made a major contribution to the campaign through covert missions that combined “creativity, cunning and advanced technology.”

Mossad chief confirms operative died during overseas mission

During his address, Barnea said his “thoughts and heart were filled with pride” while remembering the operative, who died while carrying out duties outside Israel.

He said the missions led by M. had a significant impact on the success of the campaign against Iran and were instrumental in the execution of Operation Roaring Lion.

However, as per intelligence protocol, the Mossad chief did not disclose the operative’s full identity or the exact mission during which he died.

Who was ‘M.’?

Later reports by Israeli media identified “M.” as Erez Shimoni, a former Mossad operative and a 30-year veteran of the agency.

According to reports, Shimoni died in May 2023 when a tourist boat overturned on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy near the Swiss border.

The boat was reportedly carrying Israeli and Italian intelligence personnel during a covert meeting linked to efforts against Iran’s weapons network.

The incident also claimed the lives of two Italian intelligence officers and the wife of the boat captain.

Funeral held in Ashkelon with senior Mossad officials present

Following his death, Shimoni was buried in Ashkelon, where senior Mossad officials attended the funeral wearing hats and face masks, in keeping with the secrecy surrounding intelligence personnel.

At the time, Barnea had described him as a calm, kind-hearted, and deeply respected officer.

Israeli reports said he was known for his ability to connect with people and had served the agency for nearly three decades.

What is Operation Roaring Lion?

Operation Roaring Lion is the codename used by Israel for its ongoing campaign targeting Iran’s strategic and nuclear infrastructure.

According to recent reports, the operation is being carried out in coordination with the United States, which refers to the same mission under a different codename.

The campaign began amid heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security concerns.
