Meet Mary Nighy — The Immensely Talented Daughter of British Actor Bill Nighy
British stage and screen star Bill Nighy is one of the most celebrated actors from the United Kingdom.
The 76-year-old’s many accolades include two BAFTA Awards and a Golden Globe Award, as well as nominations for an Academy Award, a Tony Award, a Laurence Olivier Award, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Per IMDb, his many notable movie appearances include 1998’s “Still Crazy,” 1999’s “Guest House Paradiso,” 2003’s “Love Actually,” 2004’s “Shaun of the Dead,” 2008’s “Valkyrie,” 2010’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” 2012’s “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” and 2022’s “Living” (for which he received his only Oscar nomination to date).
What many people don’t know is that he has a daughter who is following in his footsteps in the world of entertainment. But who is Mary Nighy?
Mary Nighy Is a Filmmaker, Writer, and Former Actress
The immensely talented Mary Nighy is a 41-year-old filmmaker, writer, and former actress. She is the daughter of Bill Nighy and English actress Diana Quick, 79.
She became an actress despite her parents advising her not to do so — which she believes was thanks largely to her mother’s own negative experiences as a young woman in the industry (per a 2023 interview with The Guardian).
Mary said, “It took my breath away, the objectification of her body. She was very matter-of-fact telling me all this. I felt like crying, I couldn’t bear it. That’s my privilege, in a way, of being a younger generation.”
Her dive into acting was rather brief, however. Her first experience came in the 1998 radio play “The Young Ambassadors” and her most recent came in the 2009 British black comedy slasher movie “Tormented.” She then opted to move behind the camera.
In between those two roles, she appeared in the likes of the British television drama “The Lost Prince,” the British mystery series “Rosemary & Thyme,” the British spy drama series “Spooks” (known as “MI-5” in some countries), and 2006’s historical drama movie “Marie-Antoinette” (per IMDb).
Since then, she has focused on writing and directing. Her notable writing credits come in the form of two short films — those being 2010’s “Into the Night” and 2011’s “Small Town Glory.”
As a director, she’s helmed the likes of the 2008 short film “Player,” the 2012 stage play “Shallow Slumber,” episodes of British crime drama series “Silent Witness” and “Traces,” an episode of thriller series “Industry,” an episode of historical drama series “Say Nothing,” and the 2022 psychological thriller drama movie “Alice, Darling.”
She is also set to direct episodes of the drama thriller series “Breakers,” which releases either later this year or early in 2027.
She Directed Her Dad, Bill Nighy, for the First Time in 2025
In 2025, Mary Nighy directed her father, Bill Nighy, for the first time. It came in a promotional video for the knitwear collection Bill helped to design. He did so in a collaboration with clothing brand John Smedley.
Mary posted the video on her Instagram account on October 10, 2025.
She captioned the post, “Such fun directing my father for the first time for @johnsmedleyknitwear showing off the collection he designed, storks and all :)”
The caption continued, “Co-starring his friends Lavinia, @mickjones100 and @msmirandasawyer.”
Mary then gave credit to everyone else involved in making the video, such as the producer, the editor, and the production designer.
Bill looked to be having a great time in the video — and he certainly looked smart in the clothing he’d helped to design.
