Lagos assures intending retirees of prompt pension payments, urges timely documentation
The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of public servants, assuring prospective retirees of seamless processing and prompt payment of retirement benefits.
Speaking at the 30th Pre-Retirement Documentation Seminar held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, on Monday, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said the initiative reflects the state’s determination to support workers beyond active service.
Agoro, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Mrs. Sunkanmi Oyegbola, noted that the seminar was designed to simplify retirement processes and eliminate delays often associated with documentation lapses.
“This programme marks the first Retirement Benefit Documentation to be held this year, demonstrating the importance placed on a smooth and efficient documentation process for all retirees,” he said.
He commended the management of the Lagos State Pension Commission for sustaining the exercise, recalling the impact of the previous edition held in October 2025 in facilitating seamless retirement processing.
The Head of Service urged prospective retirees to take advantage of the seminar by engaging experts and asking questions that would clarify procedures for accessing their benefits.
“As long as your documentation is up to date, the Lagos State Government, through LASPEC, will ensure prompt processing and remittance of your retirement benefits,” Agoro assured.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Director-General of LASPEC, Babalola Obilana, said the seminar was part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening pension administration in the state.
Obilana described retirement as a new phase of life that requires adequate preparation, noting that the programme was structured to equip participants with essential knowledge on pension processes, financial planning, and post-service wellbeing.
“This seminar forms a critical part of LASPEC’s commitment to ensuring that every retiring officer transitions smoothly from active service into retirement with clarity, confidence, and adequate preparation,” he said.
He explained that many retirement challenges stem from inadequate information and delayed documentation, stressing that the initiative seeks to provide accurate guidance and eliminate uncertainty.
According to him, participants would be taken through step-by-step procedures for benefit processing, roles of key stakeholders under the Contributory Pension Scheme, as well as strategies for financial management and healthy living after retirement.
Obilana added that the state government had continued to prioritise transparency, accountability and efficiency in pension management through reforms and improved stakeholder collaboration.
“The Lagos State Government remains firmly committed to the welfare of its workforce, both in active service and in retirement, with a focus on prompt and efficient processing of retirement benefits,” he stated.
He, however, stressed that retirees also have a responsibility to ensure timely submission of accurate documentation to avoid delays in accessing their entitlements.
