Kashere Varsity Unveils Book on Ex-VC Prof. Umaru Pate’s Leadership, Reforms, Academic Impact
The Federal University Kashere (FUK), Gombe State, has unveiled a new book chronicling the leadership journey, academic contributions, and institutional reforms of its immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Professor Umaru Pate.
The publication, titled “Umaru Pate: An Icon of Visionary Leadership, Knowledge, Transformation and Impactful Change,” was presented in Abuja, attracting academics, policymakers, and stakeholders from Nigeria’s education and media sectors.
Speaking at the unveiling, the book’s editor and Pro-Chancellor of FUK, Professor Williams Olu-Aderounmu, said the work was conceived to preserve institutional memory and provide a scholarly reference on effective leadership within Nigeria’s university system.
He described Pate as a transformational leader whose tenure strengthened governance structures and accelerated institutional development at the university.
“This book is not merely a compilation of essays. It is a carefully curated scholarly testament—an intellectual monument capturing the philosophy, leadership trajectory, and transformative impact of an extraordinary academic and reformer,” Olu-Aderounmu said.
He noted that the 11-chapter publication examines Pate’s early life, academic progression, leadership philosophy, public engagement, and reform initiatives that shaped the growth of FUK.
According to him, Pate’s administration recorded notable gains in infrastructure development, academic programme expansion, research output, and staff welfare.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, said the book provides a platform to reflect on values that defined Pate’s leadership and professional contributions.
Ribadu emphasised that Pate’s influence extended beyond academia into media practice, public policy, and journalism ethics, particularly in promoting responsible reporting during elections and security challenges.
He added that Pate’s research in media and governance contributed to peacebuilding efforts by addressing misinformation and encouraging balanced reporting in sensitive national contexts.
The NUC boss further noted that the former vice-chancellor played a significant role in strengthening mass communication education in Nigeria through engagement with regulatory frameworks and curriculum development.
He described the book as a valuable resource for scholars, administrators, and emerging leaders seeking models of ethical and service-driven leadership.
In his remarks, Professor Umaru Pate expressed appreciation to colleagues, mentors, and collaborators, describing the recognition as a collective acknowledgement of shared efforts toward advancing scholarship and national development.
He stressed that leadership must be anchored on transparency, credibility, and service to society, while urging the university community to sustain the progress recorded during his tenure.
The book launch not only celebrated Pate’s contributions but also reinforced the importance of documenting leadership experiences as part of strengthening institutional learning and governance in Nigeria’s higher education sector.
