Kano Residents Celebrate Garo’s Nomination as Deputy Governor
Residents of Kano State have trooped out in large numbers to celebrate the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, turning major streets into scenes of jubilation and political excitement.
The development followed an official announcement contained in a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, which immediately triggered widespread reactions across the Kano metropolis and several local government areas.
Eyewitnesses reported that youths and supporters flooded major roads, riding motorcycles, driving cars, and marching in groups while chanting “Sai Abba” and “Sai Garo” in support of the governor and his nominee.
Many of the celebrants carried portraits of Garo alongside those of Governor Yusuf, singing and dancing as they moved from one location to another in a show of solidarity.
Despite the large crowds, the celebrations were largely peaceful, with no reported incidents of violence. In some areas, particularly Garo town, the excitement continued into the early hours of Thursday.
Garo’s nomination followed the resignation of former Deputy Governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026, which created a vacancy in the state executive.
Governor Yusuf has since forwarded Garo’s name to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, in line with constitutional provisions.
According to the government, the decision was reached after extensive consultations with key political stakeholders and is aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring continuity in service delivery.
Garo, 48, is a seasoned politician with over two decades of experience in public service. He has held several positions, including State Organising Secretary, Special Adviser to the Governor, Chairman of Kabo Local Government, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
He was also the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections.
In a related development, the Kano State House of Assembly has formally invited Garo for screening, marking the next stage in the confirmation process.
The nomination has continued to generate positive reactions among supporters, who view it as a strategic move to consolidate governance and political stability in the state.
