Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said he is ready to support any consensus candidate that may emerge from the coalition being formed around the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi.
Atiku made the declaration during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday while addressing questions on unity and candidate selection within the coalition.
Speaking on whether he would step aside in the interest of unity, the former presidential candidate stressed that the priority is backing whoever emerges through the agreed process.
“It’s not the issue of stepping aside, rather would I support? In the coalition, the first option would be to work out a consensus, if that doesn’t emerge then we go for direct primary and I will support anybody who emerges,” he said.
He maintained that consensus remains the preferred route for the coalition.
“Consensus is the first option as far as the party is concerned, we will aim at consensus, if we don’t get it then we go for election,” Atiku added.
When asked directly if he would уступ his ambition for Obi should he be considered more popular, Atiku was emphatic.
“I will step aside for any winner,” he said.
Pressed further on whether that would include Obi, he replied, “Of course, if he is a contender, why not.”
The remarks signal Atiku’s willingness to prioritise coalition unity as opposition figures continue consultations ahead of the next electoral cycle.
