IGP Tunji Disu Orders Dismissal of Officers Over Fatal Shooting in Delta, Recommends Prosecution
The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal of officers implicated in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as a grave violation of police rules and human rights.
Addressing journalists at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Disu confirmed that officers involved in the killing of Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026, have been recommended for dismissal following the conclusion of an internal disciplinary process.
He said the recommendation has been forwarded to the Police Service Commission (PSC) for final ratification, after which the affected officers will face criminal prosecution.
The development follows widespread outrage over the incident, which went viral and reignited national concerns over extrajudicial killings and police brutality.
Officers Found Culpable
According to the IGP, the principal officer involved in the shooting, ASP Nuhu Usman, alongside other personnel connected to the case, was immediately transferred from Delta State Command to Abuja to ensure a transparent and impartial investigation.
He disclosed that the Force Disciplinary Committee found the officers culpable after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Their actions were in direct breach of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedures on the use of firearms,” Disu said, stressing that lethal force must only be used as a last resort and strictly within the provisions of the law.
He further revealed that two Superintendents of Police appeared before the disciplinary committee, while three Inspectors underwent orderly room trials, all culminating in recommendations for dismissal.
Apology to Victim’s Family
Disu offered an unreserved apology to the family of the deceased, describing the killing as avoidable and deeply regrettable.
“To the family of the late Mene Ogidi, I extend my deepest condolences. This incident does not represent who we are as a Force,” he said.
Public Outrage and Calls for Reform
The incident has drawn comparisons to previous cases of alleged police excesses, fueling public anger and renewed calls for accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
Civil society organisations and concerned citizens have demanded justice, warning that failure to act decisively could further erode public trust in law enforcement.

The police chief reassured Nigerians of the Force’s commitment to ending impunity, vowing that officers who abuse their authority will face the full weight of the law.
He appealed for calm, urging residents of Delta State and the general public to remain law-abiding as the legal process progresses.
The Effurun shooting has become one of the most widely discussed security incidents in recent times, placing renewed scrutiny on police conduct and the urgent need for sustained reforms in Nigeria’s policing system.
