IG Disu Restructures Police Monitoring Unit, Makes Fresh Appointment
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered a major shake-up of the Police Monitoring Unit, in a move aimed at tightening discipline and improving how officers carry out their duties across the country.
The decision, which was confirmed on Monday in Abuja, signals a fresh push by the police leadership to strengthen internal oversight and restore public confidence in the force.
Authorities say the restructuring is part of a wider reform effort focused on accountability and efficiency.
Force spokesperson, Anthony Placid, explained that the changes are designed to reposition the unit for better performance. He noted that the Monitoring Unit will now operate with a clearer structure and stronger capacity to supervise police activities nationwide.
“As part of the reorganisation, the unit has been streamlined and strengthened to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across Commands, Formations, and Departments.

The development is expected to close gaps in supervision and improve response to misconduct within the force. Officials say the unit will now play a more active role in tracking officer performance, identifying lapses, and enforcing compliance with professional standards.
The police leadership believes the reform will help reduce cases of abuse, improve service delivery, and ensure that officers remain accountable at all levels. There are also expectations that the strengthened unit will support faster investigations into complaints against personnel.
As part of the restructuring, the Inspector-General approved a leadership change. Aliyu Abubakar, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been appointed to head the newly reorganised unit.
Abubakar brings years of investigative experience to the role. He previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State. During his time in those positions, he handled several high-profile cases and worked closely with state authorities to improve investigative processes.
Police authorities say his appointment is expected to bring stronger leadership to the Monitoring Unit and drive the reforms needed to achieve the force’s goals.
