“I travelled all the way for ₦1.5m job, only to be chased away” — Small chops vendor laments
A Lagos-based small chops vendor has narrated how he was lured into a fraudulent business arrangement involving a large small chops order worth ₦1.5 million.
Business deal turns sour in Lagos
The incident reportedly occurred after the man received a call from an individual who asked him to travel from Ikorodu to Chevron to finalize the deal for an event catering service.
Believing the offer was genuine, the vendor said he left his routine work and made the long trip to meet the supposed agent.
“I was called from Ikorodu to come to Chevron for a small chops order for 250 people worth ₦1.5 million. When I got there, I priced everything properly and we discussed the job. Suddenly, the man told me I had to give him 40% of the total money before I could see the actual client,” he said.
Shocked by the demand, the vendor explained that such a condition was unreasonable and outside normal business practice.
Security intervention escalates situation
The situation reportedly worsened when the vendor refused to comply with the demand.
According to him, the alleged agent called on security personnel, who then forced him out of the premises without hearing his side of the story. The incident left him stranded and frustrated after investing time and transportation costs.
“I told him it was not possible to give 40% just like that, but he insisted. Next thing, he called security and they chased me away like a criminal. I came all the way for nothing. This is pure wickedness,” he lamented.
Similar scam tactics targeting small business owners have been reported in Lagos in recent years, raising concerns about due diligence in informal contracts.
