Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has shared the unexpected story behind how his collaboration with global rap heavyweight Nicki Minaj came to life.
During a recent podcast interview, the singer disclosed that he was unaware for years that the American rapper had been following him on Instagram.
According to him, the moment that sparked the collaboration began after a late-night studio session and a club outing in Abuja. Inspired by the energy of the night, Davido recorded a track and immediately felt Nicki Minaj would be the ideal artist to feature on it.
Still in the moment, he decided to send her a direct message. That was when he realized she had already been following him on the platform.
“I wake up and see the DM, I’m like, ‘What?’ Nicki Minaj DMed me,” he recalled. “I checked and saw she was already following me. I replied, and she said, ‘Yo, send your number.’ I sent it, and we ended up on FaceTime.”
Davido explained that the pair spoke for about 15 minutes during the video call before he sent her the song. He said Nicki Minaj responded positively almost immediately.
“We spoke for like 15 minutes. I sent the song, she said it was fire,” he said. “She sent her verse back the next day.”
That quick exchange eventually resulted in “Holy Ground”, a standout track from Davido’s 2020 album A Good Time.
