Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has expressed concern over the rising wave of insecurity in northern Nigeria, suggesting that the surge in terror attacks may be linked to political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a post shared on X on Wednesday, Sani said the recurring pattern of increased violence during election periods cannot be dismissed as coincidence.
“Each time an election approaches, there is usually a spike in daring terror attacks that were not previously experienced in the North. That cannot be a coincidence,” he stated.
He further suggested that those behind such attacks could be identified through their public reactions.
“There may be no names attached, but from their statements after each incident, one can begin to identify them,” he added.
The former lawmaker described the alleged use of insecurity for political advantage as a dangerous and unethical strategy, warning of its far-reaching consequences.
“Using terror as a political tool is one of the most tragic and dangerous strategies. It is like burning the farm just to claim ownership of the land,” he said.
Sani’s remarks come amid similar concerns raised by the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, who also recently linked spikes in terrorist activities to the political calendar.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Musa noted that attacks often increase during politically sensitive periods, suggesting that some actors may be exploiting insecurity to weaken the government.
He added that such actions could be driven by individuals seeking to create instability or undermine public confidence in leadership.
