The Supreme Court of Nigeria has nullified the national convention held by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan, Ibadan, on November 15 and 16, 2025.
The convention had produced a factional leadership led by Tanimu Turaki, SAN, but had been embroiled in prolonged legal battles before the final ruling.
Prior to the event, a Federal High Court had restrained the party from proceeding, citing violations of the party’s constitution and unresolved disputes from state congresses.
The court also noted that some aspirants were excluded, raising concerns about due process.
Despite the subsisting court order, the PDP went ahead with the convention, triggering further litigation.
The Court of Appeal Nigeria later upheld the lower court’s decision, ruling that the exercise was conducted in defiance of valid judicial orders and could not stand.
The Turaki-led faction subsequently approached the apex court, seeking to overturn the rulings and validate both the convention and the executives it produced.
However, in its final decision, the Supreme Court affirmed the earlier judgments, effectively voiding the Ibadan convention and bringing an end to the legal dispute over the legitimacy of the factional leadership that emerged from it.
