The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has cautioned political actors against violence and inflammatory rhetoric as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace, stressing that democracy must not be undermined by thuggery or smear campaigns.
At the end of its caucus meeting held at the Akure residence of its leader, Reuben Fasoranti, the group warned that rising political tensions, if left unchecked, could threaten national stability. The communiqué, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, urged politicians to embrace peace and civility during campaigns.
Beyond electoral concerns, Afenifere raised fresh alarm over worsening insecurity, particularly in the South-West, describing the trend as deeply troubling. It called on regional governors to take decisive action, including strengthening local security outfits and accelerating moves toward the establishment of state police.
The group emphasised the need for enhanced surveillance and stronger collaboration with neighbouring states such as Kwara State, Kogi State, Edo State and Delta State, noting that criminal elements often exploit forest corridors across state boundaries.
It also advocated a multi-layered approach to tackling insecurity, combining both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies, while urging authorities to expose internal collaborators aiding criminal networks.
Afenifere described the spate of killings across Yorubaland and other parts of Nigeria as unacceptable, warning of what it termed a “genocidal agenda” and calling for urgent, coordinated intervention by security agencies.
While acknowledging steps taken by the administration of Bola Tinubu, including engagements with security chiefs, the group insisted that more must be done to restore public confidence and ensure lasting peace.
On governance, the organisation reiterated its long-standing call for restructuring, describing it as essential to achieving a more stable and equitable federation.
In a lighter note, Afenifere announced plans to mark the centenary of its leader, Fasoranti, on May 11, 2026, with several prominent Nigerians expected to attend.
