Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stepped down from his role to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu said his exit will officially take effect on April 30 to allow for a smooth transition of duties.
Adelabu described his time in office as an honour, thanking the President for the trust placed in him. He noted that serving in the power sector gave him the opportunity to contribute to key reforms critical to Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic development.
Governorship Ambition Drives Decision
The former minister explained that his resignation is necessary to fully concentrate on his long-standing ambition to become governor of Oyo State.
He referenced the provisions of the amended Electoral Act, which require political office holders to step down before contesting elections. Adelabu added that his governorship pursuit dates back to 2016 during his time as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, a role he left in 2018 for the same ambition.
