Abia 2027: Consensus candidacy will weaken APC — Chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Apostle Chuks Alozie, has said that adopting consensus to choose a governorship candidate for the 2027 election will weaken the internal democracy of the party in the state.

The party chieftain said this will send a wrong signal of needless participation to the APC grassroots supporters in Abia State.

Apostle Alozie said this when he interacted with newsmen in Abuja over the alleged move to adopt consensus in choosing the governorship candidate of the party in the state.

He said the move will sideline the voices of thousands of APC members whose expectation is to choose their candidates through the ballot as well as undermine the democratic principles which the APC upholds.

He said: “APC’s best chance of victory is to field an acceptable candidate whose emergence is through a transparent competition process reflecting on the majority’s will.

“The essence of any political party primaries is to test the popularity of aspirants, their readiness and vision, the person is expected to visit the constituencies and wards, earn the trust of the party members and at the same time sell their manifesto.

“So if Abia APC fails to abide by this process in presenting its governorship candidate and others whom the party must have scrutinised, as an opposition party in the state, I fear we may end up struggling to withstand the rigorous general campaign that is coming up.”

Apostle Alozie while reacting to the effect of such consensus candidates to APC’s unity in the state said true unity can be achieved through an open contest and not an imposed agreement.

He warned that consensus governorship candidates and others in Abia State APC will breed factionalism, anti-party activities, and resentment.

He added: “History shows that once there is an imposed candidate in a political party and members whose preferred candidates were shut out of the race become demoralised, the next is defection with their large number of supporters or you see things like factionalism and anti-party activities.

“When a free and fair primary is conducted, everyone gets a sense of belonging, even those that lost at the primaries will accept the outcome and join forces for the victory of the party.

“In fact, rejecting the so-called consensus candidates in Abia APC will not only showcase the democratic nature of APC, it will also project the quality of our various flag bearers, including that of governorship candidate.”

Apostle Alozie said in the interest of democratic integrity, electoral competitiveness, and party cohesion, the State working committee (SWC) in Abia State should uphold the sanctity of open primaries and reject a move for a consensus governorship candidate by any individual or group of persons within the party.

“This honour is richly deserved.

“Senator Adeola’s emergence reflects the wide acceptance, credibility, and goodwill he enjoys—not only among partisan political actors, but also across the spectrum of the sophisticated, enlightened, and development‑minded citizenry of Ogun State. His nomination stands as a strong testament to a leadership profile built on competence, commitment, accessibility, and an enduring passion for service.

“Over the years, Distinguished Senator Adeola has demonstrated a remarkable grasp of governance and public responsibility, inspiring confidence among diverse groups and communities. His acceptance across different settings underscores the trust people repose in his ability to provide purposeful, inclusive, and people‑oriented leadership for our dear state.

“As a body committed to the progress, unity, and advancement of our people, we are pleased to align ourselves with this growing trust and collective expectation. We are particularly hopeful that, under his administration – by the grace of God and the will of the people in 2027 – groups and communities that have long remained neglected or underrepresented will be deliberately mainstreamed into the developmental agenda of the government.

“The Club notes with particular concern the road leading to the ancient and very prominent town has the Ogun state Radio and Television Studios, Federal University of Medicine and Medical Sciences as well as Macpherson University but in a very sorry and perilous state. Going by the antecedents of the Distinguished Senator in the various interventions he had done even while he was yet to be the governor, it is our hope that this important road will receive his attention.

“We believe Ogun State deserves a future anchored on fairness, inclusion, sustainable development, and shared prosperity. It is our considered view that Senator (Dr.) Solomon Olamilekan Adeola possesses the capacity, exposure, and broad‑based acceptance to lead Ogun State to greater heights.

“We therefore stand in solidarity with his nomination and lend our voice to this historic moment with optimism, pride, and sincere expectation for a more inclusive and prosperous Ogun State.

“CONGRATULATIONS

“We wish you wisdom, strength, and resounding success in the journey ahead.”
