Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that if former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is basing his 2027 presidential ambition solely on being from the North, then only voters from the region should support him.

Amaechi made the remark while reacting to Atiku’s recent comments, in which the former Vice President suggested that the North has not been adequately represented in Nigeria’s leadership.

Speaking during an interview on Friday, Amaechi cautioned against the use of ethnicity and regional sentiment in politics, stressing that leadership should be determined by broader considerations beyond geography.

According to him, “If Atiku Abubakar is saying that the only qualification he has is because he is from the North, then it means that on election day, the North will vote for him and the South will not vote for him. That is what it means.

“For me, it does not matter whether you are from the North or South. There are other factors that play important roles.”
