What is space snow?

Snow exists in many parts of the universe, but space snow is not soft white flakes like we get on Earth. It is made of different chemicals and looks very strange.

Earth snow vs space snow

Earth snow is frozen water that melts. Space snow is made of gases like carbon dioxide or methane and often turns directly into gas without becoming liquid.

Dry ice snow falls on the red planet

Mars has snow made of carbon dioxide, also known as dry ice. It gets extremely cold during winter and covers the surface with dry ice snow.

Methane snow on Titan

Saturn’s largest moon Titan has snow made of methane. It also has methane lakes and rivers, making its snow completely different from Earth.

Why space snow does not melt

In space, snow does not melt into liquid because of very low pressure. Instead, it changes directly from solid to gas. This is called sublimation.

Earth’s snowflakes are soft, light, and break easily. But space snow is very different. Depending on the planet’s temperature and chemicals, space ice can be much harder, heavier, and more tightly packed.
