The Lagos State Taskforce has intensified enforcement on environmental sanitation violators, carrying out a coordinated statewide monitoring operation aimed at tackling infractions and restoring public order across the metropolis.
The exercise, conducted in line with the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law of 2017, was led by the agency’s chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, who personally supervised operations across multiple flashpoints known for recurring environmental violations.
From Ikeja to Iyana-Ipaja, Abule-Egba, Agege Abattoir, Iyana-Oworo, Lagos Island, Lekki–Ajah corridor, and the Ijora axis, the operation recorded a high level of compliance, particularly in adherence to movement restrictions and suspension of commercial activities. However, authorities noted that some residents failed to actively participate in the sanitation exercise.
At Ile-Epo in Oke-Odo LCDA, Akerele commended transport union members for taking initiative in cleaning motor parks and surrounding areas, describing their efforts as a model for community-driven sanitation.
In a major enforcement breakthrough, Taskforce operatives apprehended over 50 suspected miscreants and street urchins along the Lekki-Epe Expressway. The suspects were accused of disrupting public peace and attempting to exploit the sanitation period for criminal activities, including acts that posed risks to public infrastructure such as billboards and road signage. Officials confirmed that all those arrested will be prosecuted.
The monthly sanitation exercise remains a cornerstone of the Lagos state government’s strategy to combat indiscriminate waste disposal, open defecation, illegal street trading and other environmental hazards.
