Visa overstays may affect Nigerian travellers, U.S Mission warns

The United States Mission in Nigeria has reiterated its warning on the consequences of visa overstays, stating that such violations could negatively affect future travel opportunities for Nigerians.

In a statement posted on its official X  account on Monday, the mission stressed the importance of full compliance with US immigration laws. It explained that overstaying visas or violating entry conditions could influence how future applications from Nigeria are assessed.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens. Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly,” the mission stated.

The mission noted that thousands of Nigerians travel to the United States annually for education, business, tourism, and family visits, urging travellers to strictly adhere to visa terms throughout their stay in order to safeguard these opportunities.

It also expressed concern over visa fraud and document misuse, describing them as serious offences that undermine the integrity of the immigration system. It encouraged members of the public with credible information on such activities to report them through official consular fraud prevention channels.

Reaffirming its stance, the mission said it remains committed to promoting safe, legal, and orderly travel between Nigeria and the US, while ensuring that compliant travellers are not unfairly affected by the actions of others.
