Japan earthquake: Tsunami warning issued after 7.4-magnitude shock off northeast coast

Tsunami warnings are in place for northeast Japan following a major earthquake on Monday.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency said the 7.4-magnitude quake occurred off the coast of Sanriku, at a depth of 10km, just before 5pm.

“Tsunami warnings are currently in effect for coastal regions of Japan,” the agency said.

Authorities say waves could be as high as three metres.

A tsunami warning is the second-highest level of alert, behind “major tsunami warnings”.
