A top Segun Sowunmi has sent a wake-up call to the People’s Democratic Party, insisting that the party must focus on internal rebuilding and unity if it hopes to remain relevant.

Following a recent Court of Appeal ruling that resolved several leadership disputes, Sowunmi said the PDP faces a bigger challenge: restoring confidence among members and supporters. He stressed that ignoring foundational principles like zoning — the rotational system designed to balance power across regions — has weakened cohesion and sparked defections.

“If Seyi Makinde does not step foot in there, I will not go. You need a ‘poster boy’ in every zone to market a party. In the Southwest, Seyi Makinde is the only poster boy we have based on his developmental performance in Oyo State. If he isn’t there, what am I going to use to market the party?” Sowunmi stated, highlighting the crucial role of visible, effective leaders in rallying support.

He further cautioned that a National Convention without broad consultation and proper adherence to zoning rules could worsen existing divisions. According to Sowunmi, inclusiveness and consensus-building are vital to prevent further defections and ensure the party’s stability.
