Tensions in West Asia have shown some signs of easing after US President Donald Trump claimed that Washington is engaged in negotiations with Iran and that the talks were making “great progress”. Trump also announced a temporary pause on US strikes for a few days, saying diplomatic efforts were moving in the right direction.
However, Iran has rejected these claims. According to an Associated Press report, Iranian officials have denied that any negotiations are currently taking place with the United States. Tehran has also vowed to continue fighting until what it calls “complete victory”.
Meanwhile, several countries including Gulf Arab nations, Egypt and Pakistan have offered to host possible peace talks between the US and Iran. Despite these efforts, Israel has said it will continue its military operations.
Iran’s Possible Demands If Talks Happen
Even though Iran has publicly denied ongoing negotiations, a report by The Wall Street Journal has outlined what Tehran could demand if talks with the US actually take place.
According to the report, Iran’s demands could include an immediate end to the war, the closure of all US military bases in the Gulf region, and guarantees that no further attacks will take place. Tehran is also reportedly demanding that Israel halt its strikes, including those targeting Hezbollah.
Iran is also expected to push for the removal of all economic sanctions and demand compensation for war damages. The country may also insist that its missile development programme continues without any restrictions.
The report further said Iran could seek a new system for the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Tehran may want to collect tolls or transit fees from ships passing through the strait, similar to the model used by Egypt in the Suez Canal.
Trump’s Peace Proposal
Donald Trump has claimed that he sent a 15-point peace plan to Iran after nearly four weeks of fighting. The proposal reportedly calls for Iran to completely shut down its nuclear programme, including banning uranium enrichment.
