Three persons have lost their lives in the town of Alwasa, Argungu local government, Kebbi state, over a misunderstanding on the celebration of the Eid festivities.
Chairman of the LGA, Sani Aliyu Gulma, told Governor Nasir Idris, who visited the area to offer condolences, that two Fulani youth came to the town on motorcycle, Monday evening and started doing stunt (boris), to celebrate the Sallah.
This type of celebration did not go down well with some residents of the town who challenged them to stop.
“Unfortunately, one of the Fulani boys brought out a knife and stabbed an innocent man nearby who was not even involved in the matter.
“The perpetrator of the act ran away but his accomplice was apprehended by the people. Luckily, myself and the DPO rescued him and took him to Argungu for safety.
“The following day, the victim of the knife stab died of wounds, which infuriated the youth in Alwasa to run into Fulani settlements to settle scores.
“Your Excellency, together security operatives and myself, trekked for more than six kilometers to pacify the youth, but unfortunately, we recovered the dead bodies of two Fulani youth killed in revenge attack.
“This is the first kind of killing in this peace – loving town of Alwasa. It is disheartening. It has been customary over the years for Fulani and other people to come to the town and celebrate the Eid festivities.
“We are grateful to you for your kindness to come and sympathise with us as a caring father,” Gulma stated.
The District Head of Alwasa, Sarkin Kudun Alwasa, Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, described the matter as unfortunate and reprehensible.
“Your Excellency, our people shall remain thankful to you for this onerous visit to condole with us.
“It has been your hallmark to always show concern to the wellbeing of your people and care in emergency circumstances, we are grateful”, he said.
In response, Governor Nasir Idris, said immediately he got the report of the incident, he decided to visit Alwasa and talk to the people.
“This is unpalatable happening, everyone knows Alwasa to be peace-loving town and receptive to everybody.
“Let me warn that the government will not allow people to take the law into their own hands, law and order must prevail in Kebbi state.
“Whoever is offended must use the proper channel of authority to seek redress. Security operatives must be allowed to do their job,” he said.
