The Presidency has cautioned that circulating reviews of an alleged tried coup might hurt Nigeria’s economic system and deter potential overseas buyers.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga issued the warning throughout an interview on Thursday urging the general public and media retailers to keep away from spreading unverified claims, noting that such reviews might injury the nation’s worldwide repute.
“When a rustic is looking for funding and the media are shouting ‘coup try,’ it scares buyers away,” he stated.
“Tales like that may destroy the nation’s repute and economic system. We have to look ahead to information and proof, not rumours.”
He confirmed that whereas some arrests had been made, no credible proof linking the people to a coup try has been established.
“Some media retailers ran with the story for clicks and a spotlight. As patriotic Nigerians, we should perceive that what we report has implications for our economic system and stability,” he added.
This follows reviews alleging that some navy officers, together with a Brigadier Basic, had been concerned in a plot to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claims later dismissed by the Defence Headquarters.
