Amnesty Worldwide has condemned the detention of lawyer Aloy Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, describing it as a “chilling escalation” of the Nigerian authorities’s assault on freedom of meeting.
In a press release posted on X on Thursday, the human rights organisation stated the duo’s remand in Kuje Jail for taking part in a peaceable meeting represents a broader try to shrink civic house in Nigeria.
“Remanding lawyer Aloy Ejimakor and Prince Emmanuel Kanu in Kuje Jail only for taking part in a peaceable meeting marks an extra and chilling escalation of Nigerian authorities’s relentless efforts to undermine freedom of meeting,” the group wrote.
